Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home.

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps do need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally and the savings should always outweigh the costs.

Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased, and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house. There are two main types of air source heat pump systems:

Air-to-water: An air-to-water system distributes heat via your wet central heating system. Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. This makes them more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.

Air-to-air: An air-to-air system produces warm air which is circulated by fans to heat your home. They are unlikely to provide you with hot water as well.

The EKO Warrior is a split system heat pump which has an outdoor and indoor unit. The heating of hot water is performed indoors, in the warm where it belongs. Sending hot water outside in winter conditions (Monobloc System) could lose between 70 and 90 Watts per metre in heat loss. It is worth noting that MCS tests do not allow for this as all COP tests are laboratory based.

Environment
  • It is common knowledge that heat pumps will cut your C02 emissions by up to 60%, dependent upon the existing fuel you use for your heating.
  • We used a Split System that requires no anti-freeze (Glycol based) which is far from environmentally friendly and needs regular checks. Anti-freeze also effects flow which can reduce the efficiency of the heat pump.
  • The use of glycol can actually lead to the growth of bacteria-reducing the antifreeze properties.
  • Slime and fungus can grow on pipes which rarely reach pasteurisation temperatures. This does not happen on indoor pipes.
  • Antifreeze is toxic and could cause contamination if incorrectly refilled.

The Governments Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) started in Spring 2014. This is a paid tariff based incentive whereby the home owner is paid a set price, index linked, for KW heating produced via the heat pump, 7.3p per KW generated over 7 years. The payments started in Spring 2014 but are back datable, so apply now before the rush!
